Important Orchid Magazines:
This page about 'Important Orchid Magazinnes' started in Novemer 2025.
My interest in orchids began in 1974. Wild orchids in the European mountains particularly caught my attention.
I decided to photograph as many alpine flowers as possible, and that included quite a few orchids.
In 1974 I didn't know that there were societies that united people interested in orchids.
In 1981, I came in contact with a Paphiopedilum grower who was a board member of a local Flemish orchid society, 'De Orchideevriend v.z.w.'.
When in 1983 the board was looking for someone to produce a magazine, I applied and was accepted.
Because, as editor and layout manager, I needed as much as possible information about orchids and so I subscribed to individual magazines from non-Belgian orchid societies.
Fifty-one (51) years have passed since then, I became acquainted with several publications including antique aswell as relatively recent ones. During recent years digital publications became more important.
Printed publications are and remain the most tangible. Digital (online) publications can always be lost; there is never any certainty that they will remain accessible after publication.
It is a certainty: "Whoever writes, will remain for ever!"On these pages I mention the magazines, new and old, that are or ware the most important.

It is a magazine about orchidology covering various items about orchid science, cultivation, travel reports and photographs. Well-illustrated articles are in German with short abstracts in English. In general the articles have a high to very high quality.

Orchid Digest.
The first volume of ‘Orchid Digest’ was edited in October 1937.
One may read about the history of this Orchid Magazine via Orchid Digest
In the first years 'The Orchid Digest' was published in a smaller format than today (demi-folio) and printed black-white.
The format was inspired by 'The Orchid Review'.
From 1969 on this bulletin was published in A4 format.
Since 1972
Orchid Digest has been, until today (November 11-2025), a beautifully illustrated magazine for the past five decades since many color illustrations brightening up the texts. It ran from 1972 on six issues annually. In 1987, the board decided to publish only four issues per year. The current format is approximately A4.
The cover is always very impressive showing a brilliant orchid flower. Interesting articles provide a lot of information about orchid species or hybrids, culture, travel reports... In the past several new orchid species have been described. Some issues ware dedicated to one genus as f.i. Lycaste, Paphiopedilum and others.

The Orchid Review.
The Orchid Review is the oldest known Orchid Magazine, for the first time published in 1893.
The Orchid Review was published monthly (excepte in 1918-1920) with "... information on every important branch of Orchidology, and to present it to the reader in a form suitable both for present use and future reference..."
In 1959 'The Orchid Review' changed a bit wich resulted in a new green cover, other fonts , layout and more photos.
From the end of 2008 on ‘The Orchid Review’ became a quarterly edited magazine published 4 times a year.
Loyal readers were not entirely happy with this decision.
In 2023 the Review had only one edition. The first annual issue, a yearbook has been published in October 2023.
Many subscribers are likely also unhappy with this decision to publish only one edition per year starting in 2023: a yearbook. For more info: The Orchid Review Yearbook. |
