In dit boek komen de verschillende soorten binnen de Centraal- en Zuid-Amerikaanse ‘venusschoentjesgeslachten’ (Cypripedioideae) aan bod nl. de Phragmipedium-, Mexipedium- en Selenipedium-soorten.
Een ‘List of Colour Plates’ geeft een overzicht van antieke en recente kleurenafbeeldingen met verwijzing naar de pagina’s waarop ze gepubliceerd zijn (vi – vii) waarop een inleiding volgt door Ph. Cribb. Na het gebruikelijke voorwoord door (viii – ix), bedankingen (x – xi) en een inleiding (p. 1 – 9) bespreken de auteurs de morfologie (p. 10 – 15), de anatomie (p. 16), de cytologie (p. 17 – 18), de bestuiving (p. 19 – 20), de verspreiding (p. 20 – 21), de ecologie (p. 22 – 25), de instandhouding (p. 26 – 31), het species concept (p. 32 – 34), en de fylogenie (p. 35 – 40).
De belangrijkste onderwerpen in deze monografie komen dan aan bod: ‘Classification’ van de subfamilie Cypripedioideae (p. 41 – 42) en de genera ‘Selenipedium’ (p. 43 – 79), ‘Mexipedium’ (p. 81 – 85) en ‘Phragmipedium’ (p. 86 – 219).
Er is een sleutel voor de genera bij de subfamilie Cypripedioideae (‘Classification); bij de genera Selenipedium en Phragmipedium is er een sleutel naar de species.
Per soort is er, naast algemene informatie, een gedetailleerde beschrijving en ook wat info over originele beschrijving en die van eventuele synoniemen, de verspreiding van de soort, de habitat en fenologie, de conservationstatus en de etymologie.
Van elke soort zijn er ter illustraties kleurenfoto’s, pentekeningen en soms ook reproducties van recente of antieke aquarellen. In een afzonderlijk hoofdstuk bespreken de auteurs ‘Natural Hybrids and Dubious Species’ (p. 220 – 226), ‘Artificial Hybridisation’ (p. 227 – 248), en ‘Cultivation’ (p. 249 – 252).
Deze monografie sluit af met een uitgebreide ‘Bibliography’ (p. 253 – 263), een ‘Appendix 1: Specimen Examined’ (p. 264 – 270), een ‘General Index’ (p. 271 – 274) en een Scientific Index (p. 275 – 281).
Conclusie.
We hebben hier een zeer mooi geïllustreerde, informatieve monografie die zeker en vast gewild zal zijn door iedere orchideeën-liefhebber en vooral door deze wiens voorkeur gaat naar de zogenaamde vrouwenschoentjes.

Niet alle in dit boek behandelde soorten worden erkend op POWO die slechts 18 soorten en 3 natuurhybriden erkent (POWO).

This book covers the various species within the Central and South American genera of the ‘slipper family’ (Cypripedioideae) namely Phragmipedium, Mexipedium, and Selenipedium.
A ‘List of Color Plates’ provides an overview of ancient and recent color illustrations with references to the pages where they were published (vi-vii), follows a preface by Ph. Cribb. After that usual preface (viii – ix), acknowledgments (x – xi), an introduction (pp. 1 – 9), the morphology (pp. 10 – 15), anatomy (p. 16), cytology (pp. 17 – 18), pollination (pp. 19 – 20), distribution (pp. 20 – 21), ecology (pp. 22 – 25), conservation (pp. 26 – 31), the species concept (pp. 32 – 34), and phylogeny (pp. 35 – 40).
Then the main topics in this monograph are discussed: ‘Classification’ of the subfamily Cypripedioideae (p. 41 – 42) and the genera ‘Selenipedium’ (p. 43 – 79), ‘Mexipedium’ (p. 81 – 85) and ‘Phragmipedium’ (p. 86 – 219).
There is a key to the genera in the subfamily Cypripedioideae ('Classification'); for the genera Selenipedium and Phragmipedium, there is a key to the species.
For each species, in addition to general information about the species, there is a detailed description, as well as some information about the original description and any synonyms, the species' distribution, habitat and phenology, conservation status, and etymology.
Each species is illustrated with color photographs, pen drawings, and sometimes reproductions of recent or antique watercolors.
There are separate chapters on ‘Natural Hybrids and Dubious Species’ (pp. 220-226), ‘Artificial Hybridization’ (pp. 227-248), and ‘Cultivation’ (pp. 249-252).
This monograph ends with a ‘Bibliography’ (pp. 253-263), ‘Appendix 1: Specimen Examined’ (pp. 264-270), a ‘General Index’ (pp. 271-274), and a ‘Scientific Index’ (pp. 275-281).
Conclusion.
We have here a beautifully illustrated, informative monograph that will surely be sought after by every orchid enthusiast, especially those whose preference lies in the so-called lady's-slippers.
