Franco Pupulin is a renowned specialist on the orchid flora of Costa Rica and Mesoamerica. He published more than 250 scientific papers and several books on these topics.
The texts which accompany the photos in this book were written by the most renowned specialists on Neotropical Orchidaceae, among which several colleagues as well as long terms associates to the Jardín Botánico Lankester of the Universidad de Costa Rica: Mario A. Blanco, Diego Bogarín Germán Carnevali Fernández-Concha, Stig Dalström, Melissa Díaz-Morales, Robert L. Dressler, Günter Gerlach, Adam P. Karremams, Alec M. Pridgeon, Gustavo A. Rojas, and Elisabeth Santiago.
The most recent biodiversity studies estimate that Costa Rica possesses the richest orchid flora in the world with more than 1,600 species. The author notes that the absolute number of orchids in Costa Rica cannot be compared with the numbers in Ecuador, Colombia or Brazil, but that the 'orchid diversity index' (the relationship between diversity and the size of an area or country) in Costa Rica the highest is within the American tropical regions.
Vanishing Beauty is a tribute to the surprising variety and the fragile beauty of the native orchids of the country, and at the same time it is a recognition to the Jardín Botánico Lankester’s tradition in orchid research and conservation.
Pupulin writes that the ‘construction’ of Vanishing Beauty formally began in 1996 and was initially conceived as one single book. The first comprehensive catalogue of Costa Rican orchids, dates from (Mora-Retana & García 1992). The list included 1416 species in 179 genera, but in their introduction, the authors indicated how they estimate that the number could exceed 1,500 species (Mora-Retana & García 1992). In 2003, Robert Dressler recognized 174 orchid genera with 1,318 species in his treatment of all the orchids of Costa Rica in volume 3 of the Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica. In 2007, in their general catalogue of the orchids from the Central American isthmus, Ossenbach and collaborators estimated that 1,461 orchid species occur in Costa Rica (Ossenbach et al. 2007), with 330 (35.37%) species considered endemic to the country. Pupulin writes that it is very likely that by the middle of the century, the flora of this small country could be blessed to include 2,000 species.

After the index (p. II) a Foreword by Joseph Arditti (p. V) is followed by an introduction ‘Inexhaustible Diversity’ by Franco Pupulin.

Each genus is briefly presented and each species within the genera occurring in Costa Rica is illustrated with a beautiful photo. Many photos are printed full-page. Next to each photo the following information is given: The species name and name of the author of the species, the location with the exact location data (e.g. 10°12'11”N 83°46'51”W, 290 m), date the flower was photographed, the reproduction ratio of the photo (e.g. 8.1: this is the original size × 8), and so on…
‘Appendices’ (p. 1395-1438) provides an illustrated overview of species that were not included in volumes 1 and 2 of Vanishing Beauty because, Pupulin writes, he had not had the opportunity to photograph those species before. It concerns species within the genera Aa, Beloglottis, ×Bensteinia, Cleistes, ×Cochlezella, Draconanthes, Epistephium, Funkiella, Goodyera, Habenaria, Horichia, Mesadenella, Monophyllorchis, Muscarella, Nemaconia, Odontoglossum, Palmorchis.
‘Photography for Science and Art’ (p. 1440-1441) informs about how and with what equipment was photographed.
'Acknowledgements' (p. 1443), 'The Authors' (p. 1444-1445), 'Literature Cited' (p. 1446-1453), 'Index of Taxonomic Novelties' (p. 1454) and an 'Index of Scientific Names' (p. 1455-1460) close this book.
Conclusion.
This richly illustrated catalog in book form covers all species within the Costa Rican orchid genera mentioned above.
The photos, often full-page, are of a superior quality.
Although the recorded species are not described, the photos can be a good help in identification.
This volume 3 of Vanishing Beauty is a very nice book that certainly will be enjoyed by those interested in Costa Rica (travelers, novice orchid amateurs, experienced orchid amateurs, etc...).
This book is what is called: a real 'coffee table book', a must for all those with interest in Costa Rican orchids..

De teksten bij de foto’s in dit boek zijn geschreven door vermaarde in Amerikaanse orchideeën gespecialiseerde orchideeën, zowel collega’s en medewerkers van Pupulin aan de Jardín Botánico Lankester van dee Universiteit van Costa Rica: Mario A. Blanco, Diego Bogarín Germán Carnevali Fernández-Concha, Stig Dalström, Melissa Díaz-Morales, Robert L. Dressler, Günter Gerlach, Adam P. Karremams, Alec M. Pridgeon, Gustavo A. Een eerste veelomvattende catalogus van Costa Ricaanse orchideeën is door Dora Emilia Mora and Joaquín García Castro voorbereid (Mora-Retana & García 1992). In die lijst zijn 1416 soorten binnen 179 geslachten genoteerd maar bij de voorstelling ervan uitten de auteurs het vermoeden dat het aantal soorten mogelijk boven de 1.500 zou uitkomen. In het derde volume van de Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica (Dressler 2003) noteerde Dressler 174 geslachten en 1318 soorten. In hun algemene catalogus van Midden-Amerikaanse orchideeën (2007) schatten Ossenbach en medewerkers dat in Costa Rica 1.461 orchideeënsoorten zouden voor komen; 330 (35,37%) daarvan beschouwden ze als endemisch. Het is zeer goed mogelijk, schrijft Pupulin dat tegen halfweg deze eeuw dit kleine land gezegend kan zijn met 2.000 soorten.

Conclusie.
In deze rijkelijk geïllustreerd catalogus in boekvorm komen alle soorten aan bod binnen de hierboven vernoemde Costa Ricaanse orchideeëngeslachten.
De foto’s, dikwijls paginagroot, zijn van een superieure kwaliteit. Alhoewel de opgenomen soorten niet beschreven zijn, toch kunnen de foto’s een goede hulp zijn bij het determineren.
Dit volume van Vanishing Beauty is een zeer mooi kijkboek dat, zeker door in Costa Rica geïnteresseerden gesmaakt zal worden (reizigers, beginnende orchideeënliefhebbers, ervaren orchideeënliefhebbers, …).
Dit is wat men noemt: een echt ‘coffee table book’, een must voor al wie geïnteresseerd is in de Orchideeën van Costa Rica.
Weet dat volume 2 nog steeds beschikbaar is bij https://koeltz.com/en/. Volume 1 is uitverkocht. Hopelijk komt er binnenkort een heruitgave.
