The volumes of this work are dedicated to Rudolf Schlechter, one of the most important and influential German orchid taxonomists of the beginning of the twentieth century.
With all the material that the authors have studied, both in nature and in various herbaria, Szlachetko and Kolanowska present the fourth volume of a total of 20 volumes about the orchid flora of Columbia.
This fourth volume starts with ‘Contents’ (p. 5), ‘New taxa and new combinations’ described in this volume (p. 10) and ‘Lecotypifications’ (p. 11), ‘Acknowledgements’ (p. 13).
In this volume, the authors continue with the subfamily Epidendroideae (p. 15- 507): Where relevant (Epidendreae) the description of a tribe, a subtribe is followed by a key.
Each genus is described, followed by a key to the species. The discussed species are illustrated with pen drawings. In addition to the name of each species, the author and the reference to the publication are mentioned. This is followed by a synonym list, the description of the plant and the flowers, the ecology (terrestrial/epiphytic… and habitat), the distribution and the representative/examined specimen, other researched material and, where necessary, relevant notes.
The tribe Bletieae, subtribe Bletiniae (p. 15-33) with genera Bletia en Calanthe.

This volume ends with a Bibliography (p. 509-511), an Index to the scientific names (p. 513-526), an Index to the numbered collections cited (p. 527-536), Maps (p. 537-586) and Plates (p. 587-562).
The reader should note that in 'Materials to the Orchid flora of Colombia' volumes 4 some names of genera and species names are not accepted by 'Plants of the World Online' (KEW ) but are considered as synonyms. These genus names are by POWO considered as synonym names: Microstylis (= synoniem name for Malaxis), Adeneleuterophora (= synoniem name voor Elleanthus), Epilyna = synoniem name voor Elleantus), Evelyna (Evelyna Poepp. & Endl. = synoniem name voor Elleanthus), Hormidium (= synoniem name voor Prostechea), Javieria (= synoniem name voor Brassavola), Panarica (= synoniem name voor Prostechea), Pseudencyclia (= synoniem name voor Prostechea), Schomburgkia (= synoniem name voor Laelia).
Conclusion.
This is the fourth of 20 expected volumes on Colombia's orchids. This fourth volume is an interesting and useful source of information about Colombian orchids. The maps give an idea where the mentioned species grow in nature. The photos are good to acceptable, some are below good standards. Koeltz informs that the Volumes 5 & 6 will cover Epidendrum by E. Hagsater. Volume 5 is expected late 2024.

De volumes van dit werk zijn opgedragen aan Rudolf Schlechter, een van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste Duitse orchideeëntaxonomen van het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Met al het materiaal dat de auteurs Szlachetko en Kolanowska zowel in de natuur als in diverse herbaria onderzocht hebben, voorzien ze in een uitgave over de orchideeënflora van Columbia van in totaal 20 volumes.
Volume 4 begint met een inhoudstabel (p. 5), ‘New taxa and new combinations’ die in dit boek beschreven zijn (p. 10) en ‘Lectotypifications’ (p. 11), dankbetuigingen (p. 13).
In dit volume gaan de auteurs verder met de subfamilie Epidendroideae (p. 15- 507). Waar relevant (Epidendreae) volgt een beschrijving van elke tribus, subtribus gevolgd door een sleutel voor de geslachten.
Elk geslacht is beschreven waarna een sleutel tot de soorten volgt. De besproken soorten zijn met pentekeningen geïllustreerd. Van elke soort is naast de naam ook de auteur en de referentie van de publicatie vermeld. Deze is gevolgd door een synoniemenlijst, de beschrijving van de plant en de bloemen, de ecologie (terrestrisch/epifytisch… en habitat), de verspreiding en de representatieve/onderzochte specimen, ander onderzocht materiaal en waar nodig relevante nota’s.

De lezer moet er wel rekening mee houden dat in ‘Materials to the Orchid flora of Colombia’ sommige (nieuwe) namen van subtribussen en geslachtsnamen niet aanvaard zijn door ‘Plants of the World Online’ (KEW) maar als synoniemnamen beschouwd worden. Volgende geslachtsnamen en daardoor ook de soortnamen worden door POWO als synoniemnamen aanzien: Microstylis (= synoniemnaam voor Malaxis), Adeneleuterophora (= synoniemnaam voor Elleanthus), Epilyna = synoniemnaam voor Elleanthus), Evelyna (Evelyna Poepp. & Endl. = synoniemnaam voor Elleanthus), Hormidium (= synoniemnaam voor Prostechea), Javieria (= synoniemnaam voor Brassavola), Panarica (= synoniemnaam voor Prostechea), Pseudencyclia (= synoniemnaam voor Prostechea), Schomburgkia (= synoniemnaam voor Laelia).
Besluit.
Dit is het vierde van 20 te verwachten volumes over de orchideeën in Colombia. Dit vierde volume is een interessante en nuttige bron van informatie over de Colombiaanse orchideeën. Koeltz informeert dat in de Volumes 5 & 6 E. Hagsater het geslacht Epidendrum zal coveren. Volume 5 wordt rond eind 2024 verwacht.
