Altough there are a lot of roadmaps, produced by several compagnies, recently only one is very good. Most of the other maps have a scale of about 1:700.000 till 1:800.000. This is only good to find your way between the major cities or communities.

Maps with scale 1: 250.000 or 1:50.000 are rare. In the seventies the Rumanians produced a touring atlas with scale 1:250.000 and in 1992 some topographic maps with scale 1:50.000 (Abeona).
Both editions are out of sale and it is extremely rare to find them, especialy the touring atlas, even in the so called antiquariats (wich are second hand bookstores in Rumania).

In 2001,
the hungarian editors 'Dimap' produced a touring atlas with scale 1:250.000.
Although this atlas contains some mistakes, it is an extremely usefull one.

The same editors also produced some
topographic maps with scale 1:50.000.
They are very usefull for
hiking tours into the mountains.
Experience with those maps is needed!

Example of a map produced by 'Abeona'.

The quality of the paper and printing is very low. The scale 1:50.000 is usefull to experienced hikers.
The map indicates the footpaths with red lines, every track has his own sign (also in the field), camping places or cabanas are indicated.
On the back of each map one can find short descriptions of the tracks (in Rumanian), with average time needed.

Interesting:
Price for a map in 1991: 148 Lei.
This was about 15 Bef. in that time or 0.75 DM or
$ 0.28.
If the Euro should have existed: € 0.37.

Note that today (December 6th. 2025)
€ 1 = 0,20 Lei (nearly idem in $).
